Not from Scratch: Crispy Oven Baked Wings
Super Bowl Sunday is just over a week away and it’s time to start planning the most important part of your party - the snacks! I recently shared some Super Bowl party ideas including a delicious chili bar (including my make ahead chili recipe) and a fun burger bar. But, no Super Bowl party is complete without chicken wings!
Chicken wings are only good when extra crispy and that’s exactly what these are. Here’s my favorite part, you don’t need any special equipment to make them - just an oven. So, if you’re like me and living without an Insta Pot or Air Fryer, you can still have crispy wings.
Before we dive into the recipe, here are a few things you should know:
Every oven cooks differently. I have a gas oven and always use the convection bake setting. Keep that in mind when cooking your own wings. The best practice is to keep an eye on them while cooking. Don’t be afraid to pull one to see if the meat is cooked. Only broil once the meat is cooked.
Don’t attempt baking without the wire rack. The wire rack allows the juices and rendered fat to drop without the chicken sitting in it. If you do straight on the baking sheet, the wings will sit in their own juices preventing them from getting crispy.
This recipe can be made ahead of time. If making ahead, see instructions below.
Extra Crispy Oven Baked Wings
Ingredients
1.5 lbs chicken wings, trimmed (tips removed, drumettes and flats separated - see IGTV for tutorial)
1 tbsp olive oil
Salt to taste
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Trim chicken wings, toss with olive oil and salt
Arrange skin side up on a wire rack placed on top of a cookie sheet
Bake for 35-40 minutes until chicken is cooked through.
Make sure oven rack is in center of oven. Broil wings for 5 minutes on high.
Turn wings over and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Remove from oven. Let coo and toss with sauce of choice.
Make Ahead Directions
Wings can be made a few hours to a day in advance. If doing this, bake at 375 for 35-40 minutes. DO NOT BROIL. Remove from oven, let cool completely, place in an air tight container and refrigerate.
When ready to serve, remove from fridge, broil on high for 5 minutes, flip and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes. Toss with sauce and serve.
